9～11世紀、主にノルウェー王の宮廷や侯（ヤール）の館にて活躍したスカルド詩人は、数人の女性を含め200余人いたとされています。

彼らは宮廷詩人でありながら、主君とともに戦った戦士でした。
主な職務は主君の勇猛果敢な戦いぶりや輝かしい勝利を讃える詩をつくること。
随伴しないと戦の状況は書けないので、詩才のほかに勇猛であることが求められたでしょう。
このあたりがやはりヴァイキング、他国の宮廷詩人とは異なるところです。

この小冊子では、とりわけ有名な15人（男性13人、女性2人）を紹介。
うち半数は作品の一部を原文（古アイスランド語）に和訳をつけて掲載しました。
